PART 3: SMALL DETAILS AND FINAL TOUCHES
after finalizing my quilt, i brainstormed a couple of images/symbols that reminded me of my grandmother. using these images, i sketched several draft ideas on how to incorporate these symbols into my larger project.

below are the drafts i came up with. from these drafts, i mixed and matched various aspects of each and created two final designs, which i then narrowed down to the one i ended up picking.
here are the two final ideas. i ended up choosing the 2nd one (on the right) because i thought the pearls complimented the left side more than the right.

after finalizing the smaller details, i created them using the same process as the face. i chose to make a 陳 (Chin) character, since my grandmother is chinese and that is her maiden name. additionally, i chose to create california poppy flowers because my grandmother was born and raised in california, and when i was younger instead of calling her "婆婆" (popo, the chinese term for maternal grandmother) my nickname for her was 'poppy' which has stuck to this day. On the stems of the flowers, I embroidered 'love, poppy' written in her handwriting as another way to bring the quilt back to her and my relationship with her. on the bottom, i have a bunch of assorted beads scattered throughout the quilt. from as long as i can remember, my grandma has collected buttons, which she let me use for this project. in addition to the buttons she has collected over the years, i was able to integrate two buttons from my great-grandmother (her mother's) collection that my grandma has saved over the years. lastly, the pearls on the top are because when i think of my grandma, i think about the pearl necklace and earrings that she always wears. in all, i wanted all the details to showcase some aspect of my grandma, my relationship with her, or her past.
